Recently we were listening to a pod cast on one of the many trips we’ve made to Toronto this year. A point was being made about the sense of place and personal meaning a child derives from seeing themselves in a photograph amidst their family members.  When a child looks at a family portrait they don’t see the ten pounds Dad has put on, or the silly hair cut Mom had, or the passing trends everyone is wearing, they see themselves belonging.  Be it multi-generational, the immediate family, or portraits of your little ones, photographs matter. The yellows interspersed through the flowers tie the photo in nicely with the colour palette of the room, leaving the space airy and bright. One of my favourite things about old family pictures is spotting all artifacts from my childhood. Some pieces of furniture, artwork, and miscellany are still part of our caravan others don’t make it. There is strange sensation to be derived from seeing a familiar object in a unfamiliar context, perhaps a painting that hung over the couch in the old family room now hangs in the rec. room in your new house gathering dust. Photographs preserve peripheral details and have the power breathe new life into artifacts from our past reminding us of the value we once endowed these objects with. There are also those pieces of miscellany that don’t make it to the next house, toys that have been given away, blankets and clothing that have been handed down, donated, or thrown away. Spotting these pieces of our past remind us of how far we have travelled and carry us back culling faded memories that are seemingly attached  to these physical pieces of ephemera – memories that might have been lost, had the artifact not made it into the frame.

For Sharon and Mike I hope this translates to memories of their first home and the beginning of their new family. For Karys, it is my secret hope that in 10 years time she will happen upon a box in the basement and be filled with questions about this first home and the circumstances that made up their lives when she was first born.

This is the premiere Little Violets Moving Portrait and we couldn’t be more pleased to share it with ya’ll. Capturing a child’s movements, voice, and reactions really contributes to the creation of a rich portrait and memento to keep and share though the generations. For most of us, our familial documentation is scant if existent at all. We may have a few old pictures of our mother when she was a little girl, or some of us might be lucky enough to have some Super8 footage from some bygone vacation to Florida or birthday party.

Imagine having a Moving Portrait of your mother as a little girl, or yourself, or little one  to pass down, share, and enjoy on special occasions. We are very excited and thankful that we can use our gifts toward such a beautiful and worth end: family heirlooms.
