January 17, 2014Four Years Old | Winding Violets ExposéPosted in Portraits,Uncategorized

Winding Violets is four years old today, and this is probably the hardest blog post I have ever had to write . . .

How do you write about something you pour your whole heart and soul into? Your every waking moment. When every book you read (and believe me there have been many, in the hundreds), every conversation you have (upon waking, driving, walking, eating, going to sleep), and every “vacation” you take comes back to building this very thing: Winding Violets.

How do you even begin to articulate a journey like that? Oh wait! Herman Melville covered this one in, “Moby Dick.” I guess that makes me Ahab?. . . yikes!

Kingston Wedding Photographer, Kingston Wedding Photographers, Lucas Tingle, Kingston Ontario,

In all seriousness, I suppose our journey has turned Winding Violets from a small business into a vocation. When that line that divides work and lifestyle is blurry at best.

When you do something you are passionate about for a living, it consumes almost every waking moment. Everything in your life is framed in relation to it. And it’s seldom something anyone actually sees, or that can be articulated.  Winding Violets is us, and we are Winding Violets. And truly I would have it no other way.

But sometimes such a blurry distinction between self and occupation, the very thing that makes us great at what we do, is really hard emotionally. When someone says, “no”  to Winding Violets, for whatever reason, they are saying “no” to us. “Too expensive,” translates to you aren’t worth it, or you don’t hold enough value as creative agents.

Inversely when someone says “Yes!” it’s a thrill. Every time someone says, “Yes” to Winding Violets, they are telling us we are worth it. They value what we create and want to see us continue to develop our legacy and brand. “Yes!” is the ultimate compliment.

What I think defines that last four years of Winding Violets, the legacy we are building, is one of Authenticity.  Winding Violets is built on an unwavering and fearless commitment to habitually look outside of ourselves, our community, our circumstances, to bring new and exciting things where they have never been before.

Exhausting?

“Yes.”

Frightening?

“Of course.”

Isolating?

“Hell yes.”

Misunderstood?

“Like you wouldn’t believe.”

Rewarding?

“Absolutely!”

The old adage is, “no man is an island.” And Winding Violets wouldn’t be possible without the support of our community, friends, all the wonderful brides and grooms who have hand selected us exclusively. We are thankful to those of you who continue to support us by passing along our name; we feel like this is the ultimate sign of support and confidence in what we do and who we are. And last but not least, all of our social media connects. We love all the comments and interactions with you on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram, keep it coming! We love seeing the things you create too.

Thank you to all the past, present, and future brides and grooms. Thank you for saying an empathic,”Yes!”  Thank you to all the couples and individuals that continue to refer us and spread our name. Thank you from the bottom of hearts. You make what we do possible.

But most importantly I want to thank my best friend, my business partner, my personal confidant, and the love-of-my-life: Melissa. For all the fear, anger, exhaustion, hurt, we get to do something we are passionate about together, hand in hand, day in day out, all because of you. One hundred percent because of you.

Seriously folks, do you think I woke up one day and just said, “I want to be a professional wedding photographer!?”

Melissa taught me that wedding photography could be cool, sophisticated, cultured, and classic, and that love stories are pretty damn awesome.

Thank you, I love you.

April 2, 2013Vizcaya Florida | Our VacationPosted in Uncategorized

Happy Tuesday,

I’m not sure whether the timing of this post is perfect or cruel, to be honest I’m torn? It’s April second, and in my neck of the woods, we woke up to freshly fallen snow…non-plused. And on this unseasonably inclement day we had planned to share our Florida vacation photos. Can you get vitamin D through a computer screen, or is that just as ridiculous as Google Nose – Googles April Fools Day joke, a scented search engine? If you are prone to wishful thinking – a glass half full kind of person – this is just what the doctor ordered.

Why Florida you may ask, after all isn’t NYC Winding Violets recurrent get away destination? Melissa has a very strong emotional connection to Florida. A lot of her best childhood memories were formed in the Florida sun, a perennial vacation spot for her family. The imagination, innovation, and magic of  Walt Disney’s legacy is forever etched on that girls heart and mind. I think Belle is held in equal esteem to Batman in our household, and is where her nickname Lissabelle comes from – does that make me the Beast?

Having said that, we didn’t visit Disney this time around, but spent most of our time in South of Florida. But I am told just seeing and smelling the Atlantic Ocean in Florida is enough to lift her spirits for weeks. Being such a Gotham hound, I am natural suspicious of tropical places and Florida is no exception. Melissa has always longed for me to share this part of her heart – her love for Florida. That’s when she found Vizcaya.

Vizcaya (prononuced viz-kye-a) is an estate that was built in the 1910s by James Deering. It’s Architecture is Italian Renaissance, and is America’s answer to Versailles – at least in my mind. This is the kind of place you can’t imagine actually having been someone’s home. I found it so inspirational I insisted we take the 3 hour drive twice to spend more time on the grounds. And I’m happy to say that there is now a home for my heart in Florida too – Vizcaya.

Bon Appétit,

The Violets

* You may have a keen enough eye to notice that these images look a little different that our usually brood. That’s because they were photographed on a very special camera and on film, if you can remember what that is. For Christmas this year Melissa bought me a camera I have been wanting for years, a Contax 645 medium format film camera. Because we take photographs for a living – which I absolutely love, so don’t get me wrong – it can be difficult to pick up our work gear and capture meaningful imagery of ourselves and our big life moments.

My answer to that was switching the tool. Instead of having that immediate gratification of a digital camera, we went the film route. We had to wait weeks to get our film back from the lab. That anticipation makes the images all the more dear and magical  to us. It was a pleasure to photograph Vizcaya Florida on film. A family treasure to keep for years to come.

Amanda I am now officially disappointed with all of my previous vacation photos;). The fact that you used film just shows how talented you both are; no relying on the digital image to tweak the shot. {April 02, 2013, 09:56am}
TheViolets lol! Thank you for the kind words Amanda, they mean a lot. I would shoot film all the time, but it's crazy expensive. So beautiful though...sadness. A great family treasure though! {April 02, 2013, 10:11am}
Gert Huygaerts This is awesome!!! What a great report on this lovely place... love the details, love the colors... just great! FAN!!!! {April 02, 2013, 02:16pm}
Kathleen Kuschmierz Wow breathtaking work ... They give off this amazing aura of calmness, tranquility & beauty. I want to go there now too! That would be a gorgeous wedding venue! {April 02, 2013, 07:56pm}
Erinn Simply beautiful. I think my favorite is the first shot of the Avalon! {April 02, 2013, 08:01pm}
Ashley Beautiful photos .. look like you guys had a great vacation. I've been to Versailles and I agree on what you wrote in comparison! Love the starfish photo .. beautiful! <3 {April 02, 2013, 08:16pm}
TheViolets Everyone loves that starfish photo! That's Melissa's favorite as well. Thanks for the lovely words Ashley : ) {April 02, 2013, 08:50pm}
TheViolets South Beach Miami is pretty excellent. We loved all the Art Deco architecture. The Park Central Hotel, is where Clark Gable used to hang. I had the most amazing ceviche. Thank you for commenting, and for leaving such lovely words Erin. {April 02, 2013, 08:53pm}
TheViolets Film is the best! It really captures the light in a unique way. It almost wraps the objects it touches in a warm hug. I think this might have something to do with the tranquility of the images. And agreed...let's have your wedding there. Why not right?! Thanks for the pretty words Kathleen. {April 02, 2013, 08:56pm}
TheViolets Wow, what a great comment! We love your enthusiasm. Thank you for the kind words Gert. {April 02, 2013, 08:57pm}
Justine I love the style of these pictures! They're amazing. I do feel like I got a little vitamin D from admiring their light, airiness... the colours are great! Thanks for sharing. {April 09, 2013, 09:41pm}
TheViolets Thanks Justine! Don't worry summer is on its way. As for the colors, these were all taken on film. A film capture really renders the colors and light so much differently then a digital image. I love it! Glad to hear you do to. - Lucas {April 09, 2013, 10:36pm}
Kirstie Frydenlund These scans are amazing!! What a beautiful post! Love love love the colors! {April 10, 2013, 11:01pm}
TheViolets Thank you Kirstie! We live in dismal Canada, so shooting in the beautiful Florida sunshine in January was a lovely reprieve. Great light, beautiful colours, and an amazing location, all made for an excellent trip and some great photographic momentos. {April 11, 2013, 02:01pm}

December 25, 2012Merry Christmas from ‘The Violets’Posted in Uncategorized

Merry Christmas!

We hope everyone had a beautiful Christmas Eve and lovely Christmas morning. We woke up to a gorgeous bed of freshly fallen snow – a White Christmas. There’s nothing quite like a blanket of pure fallen powder on Christmas Day to instill a spirit of  hope and magic in this season of renewal. I believe they call that kismet.

Melissa and I are certainly looking forward to 2013, we’ve been working hard  making deep changes to Winding Violets and also in our personal lives. The best changes are hardest, extremely sensitive to undergo, and come from deep with in yourself. Because Winding Violets is such a large part of our hearts, this renewal is sure to reflect through it. Hopefully some of it will shine on some of you and inspire you to live more fully from your own heart.

A big congratulations to all the newly engaged couples out there reading this. I can’t imagine a more perfect Christmas Day to get engaged on; saving that of 2008 when I proposed to Melissa in Bryan Park in NYC, perhaps I’m a bit bias? We’re signing off here for 2012, and going to grab some turkey. Merry Christmas from us to you!

October 12, 2011Ryan Adams | Ashes & FirePosted in Uncategorized

Hello,

Today is going to be a great day, Ryan Adams’s long anticipated (at least by us) “Ashes & Fire” was released today! When we got hitched just over three years ago we had a very small wedding with just our closest friends, 25 people all told. Upon reflection there was really a 26th guest; we hired a local guitarist to play Ryan Adams songs through the entire ceremony and have come to consider the spirit of Ryan Adams music our 26th guest, a welcome and soulful addition to a beautiful day. Since we’ve been married we’ve been to 6 Ryan Adams & The Cardinals concerts:

September 19th 2007 Theatre St. Denis, Montreal; October 31 2007 The Hammerstein Ballroom, New York City; September 7th 2008, Boston; September 27th 2008, Rochester; October 31 2008 The Apollo Theater, Harlem NYC; March 9th 2009 Florida Theater, Jacksonville.

Needless to say, Ryan Adams is near and dear to the heart of our relationship. For those that aren’t familiar, Ryan Adams is the single most prolific singer songwriter in America…full stop. He has officially released 13 records in the last 12 years; his unofficial releases are somewhere in the 20s!  Ryan Adams writes music compulsively; he is a throw back to the days when singer/songwriters actually concentrated on writing music for a living, and were so much more than just an image.  Ryan is a singer/songwriter’s singer/songwriter; in other words, if you enjoy honest songwriting straight from the heart you’ll love Ryan’s jams. He has certainly had some ups and downs along his career path, nobody’s perfect. To us though, he is a beautiful soul and has an incredible gift for sharing the beauty and pain of love.

Quality and quantity are an unusual combination, but they come together beautifully in Ryan Adams’ 13 diverse records: anything from Rock & Roll, folk, Alt. Country, to yes even Pop (see “Alive”). “Ashes & Fire” has been a long time coming, we’ve been waiting a whole year and a half! We have our tickets for December 6th at Carnaige Hall NYC and December 14th at The Winter Garden Theatre here in Toronto, looking so forward to hearing Ryan solo for the first time. Ryan Adam’s music has come full circle in “Ashes & Fire”and resembles his first record “Heartbreaker” (critically acclaimed). Ashes is filled with soulful and emotive country/folk jams, a welcome addition to the anthology. I’m on my second listen…just heavenly, can’t wait for the vinyl to arrive in the mail! Thank you Ryan for providing the soundtrack of our lives, much love.

Desire from Demolition 2002

Follow the Lights from Follow the Lights EP 2007

Dance All Night from Cold Roses 2005
